Veridian Contraption
A downloadable game for Windows
> The gates of Weneld-Uck admitted Ist-Wedilk in the usual manner, which is to say: with neither welcome nor objection.
Veridian Contraption generates living worlds of procedural strangeness. It runs them continuously. It narrates everything. You are a spectator, an occasional nudge, a curator of emergent absurdity.
Civilizations rise. Factions schism over doctrinal disputes no one can remember starting. Poets write elegies influenced by nearby monster corruption. Levies march to war. The harvest is described as 'sufficient,' which both parties understand to mean 'disappointing.'
The world proceeds whether you watch or not. When you come back, there is always more to read.
FEATURES
- Procedural world generation — terrain, peoples, names, institutions, artifacts, ecology, and prose. Each world gets its own parametric rules.
- Dense narrative voice — 80+ event types rendered in register-sensitive prose across five narrative registers
- Living agents — pursue goals, form relationships, explore dungeons, create art, join and betray institutions, accumulate epithets
- Institutional simulation — factions compete, merge, schism, and develop baroque internal bureaucracies
- Full ecology, trade, and economy — 16 animal species, caravans, food/famine systems, silver currency
- Monster lairs that escalate if ignored — spreading blight across the map
- Military system — levied forces, cavalry, tabletop-style combat resolution, wars
- 7 Eschaton types — world-altering catastrophes that reshape everything but never end the simulation
- Player tools — commission quests, found factions, sponsor artists, introduce rumors, declare embargoes, seed rivalries, mobilize armies
- 5 world flavor presets — The Long Bureaucracy, The Burning Provinces, The Deep Taxonomy, The Conspiratorial Age, Unguided
- Variable world sizes — Small to Huge with scrollable viewport
- Export world histories to text files
AESTHETIC LINEAGE
Dwarf Fortress for systemic depth and emergent narrative. Caves of Qud for procedural prose with genuine voice. The Illuminatus! Trilogy for conspiratorial world-logic and absurdist deadpan. Early D&D modules for earnest specificity about ridiculous things. Nabokov for density of language that remains, somehow, readable.
> Autumn has been surveilled in the official record. The leaves have been notified.
Full disclosure - I built this using Claude Code, I am not a programmer and failed after trying to be one for years but have always wanted to develop digital games (i made about 30 board wargames) and since there's no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism, I figure its fine to use Claude to code games. If that turns you off I totally understand. I marked no for generative AI as AI did not generate the ideas nor text (there are no graphics) used in the game, just the code, but if I misunderstood this please let me know and I'll fix it.
This game is still in development as I am adding systems, considering adding an adventure mode if enough people like it. Feel free to send me ideas, bugs, critiques or whatever else.
